Purpose: To study the results of bipolar hip arthroplasty in patients with avascular necrosis of the femoral head.
Materials and Methods: Thirty patients with avascular necrosis of the femoral head underwent bipolar rostetic replacement between June 1993 and Feb 1996. We analyzed the postoperative clinical and radiologic results of 22 hips of 20 patients who were followed for 4 to 7 years.
Results: Average patient age was 56.3 years. Average Harris hip score was 54 points preoperatively, improving to 91 points at the latest follow up. The operation time was relatively short and the complication rate was low. Two patients
developed acetabular erosion of more than 1§®, one of whom underwent revision using a cementless acetabular cup. Osteolysis around the femoral stem occurred in one patient. All the femoral stems remained stable.
Conclusion: Bipolar hip arthroplasty for avascular necrosis of the femoral head produces satisfactory clinical and radiologic outcomes as demonstrated in this medium-term follow-up study.
